SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - It’s a celebration that has been over 90 years in the making; 106-year-old Elvira Helaire-Davis is being presented with an honorary high school diploma.

The Natchitoches native is one of eight children, born to former slaves and sharecroppers.

Sandra Lister, Helaire-Davis’ granddaughter, says her grandmother has helped so many people and she wanted to honor her in return.

“She stood by us, she lifted us up, she taught us everything we know. She gave so unselfishly of herself,” said Lister.

Helaire-Davis received recognition from Natchitoches, Shreveport and the State of Louisiana.

“I am so privileged to have had this opportunity,” said Ronnie Williams, Jr, mayor of Natchitoches.

Members of the Natchitoches Parish School Board and a BESE board representative presented Helaire-Davis with her diploma on Friday, Aug. 27 at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.

The diploma she received reflected St. Paul School.

As Helaire-Davis’ remarkable journey inspires others, she says there is one thing that inspires her.

“I trust the Lord for it. I do. Amen? Amen,” she said.

Helaire-Davis has 14 children, 30 great grandchildren, 46 great-great grandchildren and 36 great-great-great grandchildren.
