Community reacts to weekend of violence in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Four people were killed, a man was wounded and an elderly woman was critically injured over the course of three days in Shreveport.

"It's like every day, ongoing violence, every single day. I mean I just wish they'd put these guns down."

People in the community describe the violence is “overwhelming” and “ridiculous.”

Shreveport Councilman Jerry Bowman fired off on Facebook.

“These are NOT RANDOM shootings taking place, but it’s enough to have citizens not feeling safe to travel about their ways during the broad daylight and definitely not at night.

He said he will be seeking legislation and encouraging his colleagues on the City Council to push “for a better staffed Police Department that can patrol our streets.”

Meanwhile, Carisa Coleman is speaking up about her experiences with violence in the ArkLaTex. Her 19-year-old son, Roderick, was killed Aug. 23, 2020, in Plain Dealing. She does not believe he was targeted, but was instead an innocent bystander.

Coleman says she still does not have answers as to who killed her son, or why.

Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington is urging anyone with information about Coleman’s death to speak up. He was fatally shot at a home in the 400 block of Birch Street.

“There were around 100 people at that house the night when he was killed,” Whittington said. “Someone knows something … and we need them to let us know.”
