Advocates march for justice in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Advocates with The Peoples Promise, and fellow community members, gathered on Saturday, May 1, to participate in a peaceful protest against lives lost at the hands of law enforcement.

The march began at 12 p.m. at 1310 North Hearne Avenue and concluded just over a mile away at the Caddo Correctional Center.

“It’s unfair to African Americans, and it’s unfair to citizens to be treated like animals,” protestor Krishun Cash said.

Many said people should not have to pay with their life for one mistake.

“Let’s stop the notion of calling Black people violent after responding to being murdered in the streets; it’s called pain,” The Peoples Promise Vice President Robert Tyler said.

The organization laid out five demands, read by Tommie McGlothen, III:

Requesting full transparency regarding the independent investigation that was approved by the parish commission thanks to commissioner Steven Jackson
Legislate a citizen’s oversight committee with subpoena power to investigate grievances submitted by constituents and/or whistleblowers from said law enforcement entity
Screen for bias and discrimination before hiring and reevaluate during training
Enact policies that make it mandatory for a law enforcement officer/deputy/sheriff observing another agent’s overuse of force or violating the rights of citizens to step in and stop the attack or mistreatment
