SunGas Renewables set to launch new facility in Pineville

PINEVILLE, La. (KALB) - A new industry is set to launch in Central Louisiana as a nearly $2 billion investment is being made at the site of the former International Paper Mill in Pineville.

SunGas Renewables is constructing a new green methanol production facility in Pineville. The spot is a step toward a greener, more sustainable future.

The new Beaver Lake renewable energy facility is set to produce 400,000 tons of green methanol per year using wood from local forests.

The project is set to provide hundreds of jobs, 1,150 during the construction of the facility and more than 100 local jobs during its operation.

The methanol produced will be used to power Maersk’s fleet of container vessels hoping this will reduce its carbon footprint and let it achieve net-zero greenhouse emissions by 2040.

“It will also help us to make sure that Louisiana will be an energy state for the next 100 years just as we have for the last 100 years by embracing this energy transition,” said Governor John Bel Edwards.

“When we started working with Pineville, the local community has just been great and super supportive of everything that we have done,” said Robert Rigdon with SunGas Renewables.

Construction is slated to begin in 2024, and the facility up and running by 2027.
